Troubleshooting Guide for SmartSource Printable Coupons

AOL Alert! You may encounter Server Errors if America Online is your Internet Service Provider (ISP). We are working on a solution, and apologize for the inconvenience.

Installing the SmartSource Coupon Printer:

The Coupon Printer will not install.

If you clicked the "Activate" button and nothing happened, or you were sent back to the selection page instead of seeing your coupons be printed, then you have something blocking our Coupon Printer from installing. Please read the following list of factors to see if one applies to you.

If you are behind a security wall or lack full administrative rights, most common in corporate environments, you will need to speak to your system administrator because only they will be able to change the permissions for our Coupon Printer to install.

Note to system administrator: The SmartSource.com Coupon Printer is backed by News America Marketing, a News Corporation company. The download has a signed Digital Certificate that ensures News America Marketing as the publisher and protects the Coupon Printer from alteration. Third-party authentication is provided by Comodo SSL.

If you have spyware blockers or anti-viral protection applications on your computer, please make sure you have the latest updates. Industry leaders like Symantec, McAfee, and Trend Micro recognize our product as safe and secure in their most recent versions.

If the above situations do not apply, then it may be that your browser settings are not configured properly to allow ActiveX items like our Coupon Printer to install. If you are using Windows XP SP2 or Vista, a yellow information bar should appear at the top of your window. That bar can only appear if your security levels are set to “medium” and all ActiveX items are set to “prompt” or “enable”.

If your settings look right, it may be that a past encounter with another product has irreparably shut the prompt down for downloads like ours. When this is the case, switching to a new browser will give you a clean slate. We’ve heard from many users who could not install our Coupon Printer using Internet Explorer that it worked like a breeze when they tried Firefox instead. You can download Mozilla Firefox for free from their site: www.mozilla.com/firefox. It will not replace Internet Explorer as your default browser if you don’t want it to. You can run both browsers on your computer (even at the same time).

The instructions say to click on a "yellow bar" but there is no yellow bar.

One of the security features of Windows XP SP2 and Vista is a Yellow Information Bar that halts add-ons from installing until the user gives the browser permission to continue. The bar is pale yellow and appears between your browser's address bar and the page content.

Without the yellow bar, our Coupon Printer cannot install. Make sure your browser is set to allow all "Active X" items to "prompt" or "enable". If your settings are correct, then there may be another factor interfering with our download. Please read "The Coupon Printer will not install" above for other possibilities.

I already installed the Coupon Printer, why am I being asked to do it again?
If you are being asked to install our Coupon Printer that means our system does not detect our latest version on your machine. Occasionally we release a new version of our Coupon Printer which requires you to install it again.
The Coupon Printer used to work, why can't I install the current one?
There are different security factors that can interfere with the installation of our Coupon Printer, factors that may not have existed the last time you installed successfully. It is best to make sure that you are using the latest operating systems and browser versions, and get the updates on all your security software.
I got a warning message not to download your Coupon Printer.

The SmartSource Coupon Printer is not spyware or adware, and it will not deliver a virus to your computer!

Our Coupon Printer uses Active X software (or an applet for Macs), a technology developed by Microsoft to add functionality within a browser. Some anti-spyware software issues alerts anytime Active X is detected, whether or not it is malicious. Active X is not harmful in itself, but can be used as a medium for spyware similar to the way that email can be used to send viruses. That doesn’t make all email or Active X downloads dangerous. Protection is in knowing and trusting the source.

Whereas spyware is downloaded without the user’s knowledge and covertly tracks the users internet activity, the SmartSource Coupon Printer does not track your activity and can only be downloaded with your explicit permission in order to print real, bar-coded coupons.

Read the warning closely. It is often just a "double-check" for you to confirm your approval of the download that is about to begin. If you are running Symantec, McAfee, or Trend Micro, get their latest updates. These industry leaders recognize our product as safe and secure in their most recent versions.

I got an error message about a "missing plug-in."
If you are using Firefox and this message appears in the Yellow Information Bar above the page content, just close the browser window. When you re-open the browser your coupons should start printing. No need to worry about a missing plug-in, the installation is now complete. If your coupon selections do not start to print, go back to the site to select the offers and try again. It usually works the second time.
A message said that my system is not supported, but I think it should be.

CompuServe, Linux and WebTV systems are not supported. We also do not support Mac systems earlier than OSX 10.4 (Tiger), or using browsers other than Safari.

If this does not apply, then you may have a security application blocking detection of your operating system. Unfortunately, if our technology cannot detect what system you are on (system unknown), then you will not be able to view or print coupons.

Selecting and printing coupons:

I'm stuck in a loop of clicking the print button, and being taken back to the offers page.

It may be that the current Coupon Printer is not installed, and the prompt to install it is being blocked. To check if you have the current Coupon Printer, in Internet Explorer, do this:

  • From the menu bar of your browser window, choose Tools > Internet Options
  • On the General tab, click the "Settings" button under Browsing history
  • Click "View Objects"
  • This will open up your Program Files (you may use another path to get to this point)
  • The current SmartSource Coupon Printer is called "CMV5 Class"

If you do not have the current Coupon Printer, refer to the section above for reasons why the installation is being blocked.

When I click the print button, I get an error message about my "default printer".
Check to make sure that your printer is on and the cable is not loose. You may also get this error if your printer is set at low-resolution or draft mode. You have to be able to print at a resolution of 300-dpi in order for the coupons to be legible enough to scan at the store. And you cannot print to PDF or any other kind of electronic file format.
A message said my coupons were printing, but it froze on that page and/or nothing printed. (PC User)

If you were trying to print several coupons, the file size may be exceededing the amount of processing memory you have available. Try printing a single coupon.

If you can’t print a single coupon, confirm that your printer is working by printing out a web page.

If there's no problem with your printer, try to print this test coupon.

If you can print the test coupon, then there may be a problem with the specific offer that failed. Please email and tell us which offer you had trouble printing. We will need to know what kind of computer, operating system and printer you are using. We also need to know which web site you were on, or if you found the coupon link from an email or banner ad. And if you received an error message, please describe what it said.

If the test coupon failed to print, our Coupon Printer may not be installed on your computer even if it seemed like you "activated" it. This will almost always be the case if you are behind a security firewall or using a public computer like at a library or internet cafe. Only your system administrator can change that.

If the test coupon failed to print...
We know that in some cases, the newest version of Java that comes with OS X v10.5 (Leopard) does not allow enough time for our technology to send barcoded information to your printer. We are working on a fix for that. In the meantime, you can change your Java setting back a version to: J2SE 1.4.2. It’s simple, here’s how:

  • Locate and open the Java Preferences application:
(Applications folder > Utilities folder > Java folder > Java Preferences.app)
  • Select the first Java Version J2SE 1.4.2 (located on the “General” tab) and close the application.
  • Refresh your Safari browser and try to print again. This should do the trick.
We apologize for this inconvenience.

A message said I printed the offer(s), but I didn't print any.
SmartSource coupons usually have a print limit of 2 times on any one computer. If you share a computer with other users, they could have used those prints already. Also, offers can expire if the total number that the manufacturer made available has been met. This can be the case with popular items.
Not all the coupons I selected to print came out.
Some offers may not be available for you to print even though you were able to select them. In that case, there will be a message after the printing screen that tells you if an offer didn't print for this reason, usually because it reached a print limit. If there was no message like this, then another possibility is that the coupon files exceeded the amount of processing memory you have available. Try printing fewer coupons at a time.
My coupon didn't print, and now it's gone.
You usually have a second chance to print any SmartSource coupon in case the first attempt failed. We can only tell if the command to print was sent to your printer. We cannot tell if your printer completed the action. After 2 requests, a coupon is no longer available. Please check your printer before you try printing any more.

Questions about the printed coupon:

My coupons printed out with black or inverted images or missing text.
If this happens with all the SmartSource coupons you try to print, you may not have enough processing memory to produce our hi-resolution coupons. If this happens with only some coupons, please email us and tell us which specific offer it was so we can investigate.
I do not want ads printing out with my coupons.
The national brands who provide these free savings to you have the option to add their promotional content below their coupon as well, in which case they take up a full printed page. You do not have the option to turn that feature off if you choose to print that coupon.
I would like as many coupons as possible to fit on a page to save paper.
Our regular coupons can print up to 3 on a page. But some coupons contain additional promotional content that fills up a whole page (see above). Depending on the order that selected offers are sent to your printer, a full page coupon may interrupt single, regular ones from falling 3 to a page.

Redeeming coupons in store:

My coupons wouldn't scan at the store.
Your printer must be able to produce at a resolution of 300-dpi in order for the coupons to be legible enough for scanning.
My store will not accept internet coupons.
SmartSource printable coupons should be redeemable at any store that accepts regular coupons – after all, we're the same company that puts those regular coupons in the Sunday paper! News America Marketing has relationships with most retail chains who understand this. Unfortunately, sometimes local store managers make their own policies. If a store manager does not accept our coupons, please present this letter which explains how SmartSource is a leading provider of valid printable coupons.
